CREATIVE ROADTRIP DESCRIPTION:
We invite experienced photographers to join Norwegian photographer and educator Ragne K Sigmond and Elisabeth N Aanes, founder of NORDphotography, for an unforgettable creative road trip around Iceland.

Ragne is our Nordic Master of Light-painting. Her work has earned her the Norwegian Photography Prize (2017), three consecutive Best in Class awards at NFF competitions (2021–2023), and Photographer of the Year (2023). She has taught photography with a special focus on light and light-painting since 2006 and has been an invaluable instructor for NORDphotography since 2018.
With her unwavering creative energy, Ragne has a remarkable ability to spot a scene and, within minutes, compose one-of-a-kind images that combine compelling light, intriguing forms, a refined balance of colour and shape, and a subtle dash of magic. Get an insight to Ragne's process and her light-painting work in this interview by Mary Pat Revee for Lensscratch

In addition to running NORDphotography and Saga Center for Photography, Elisabeth N Aanes has a long track record of curating photographic work and has mentored photographers in project development since 2011. She has many years of experience exploring Iceland and has carefully curated this road trip to include intriguing photographic locations, hidden gems, unique hotels, and visits to some of Iceland’s most remarkable geothermal pools and spas.

Traveling along the iconic Ring Road, you’ll be immersed in Iceland’s breathtaking landscapes. From majestic waterfalls and steaming geysers to black sand beaches and glacier lagoons, every stop offers an opportunity to create, reflect, and connect with the raw beauty of the land. Throughout the journey, you’ll have ample time to photograph, share your work, receive feedback, and further develop your lighting techniques. You will explore different ways of responding to Iceland’s unique landscape, allowing your own distinctive creative voice to emerge and grow.

We will choose a few designated locations to meet up in the evening for light painting demonstration and technique training. Participants will also be encourage to bring with them a few props that can be used to distort or add mystic to the landscape. Typical useful props: Mirrors, objects with interesting forms, fabrics in different colours etc. We will send you advice on which hand held flash lights Ragne recommend to bring along.

Ragne’s way of working emphasises simplicity and awareness, teaching you how to streamline your process so you can remain flexible and responsive wherever you travel in the future. By gaining a deeper understanding of light and basic light-painting techniques, and by training your eye to compose images using what is already around you, you will always have the tools to create meaningful and atmospheric photographs, no matter the location. Working with simple concepts, creating space for spontaneous on-the-spot ideas, and learning to “let go” are central to Ragne’s creative approach. Taking chances and exploring the unknown are encouraged and often lead to surprising and innovative results. If your mind is open, this process may lead your work in new and unexpected directions.
We will not only use Iceland’s landscape as our creative canvas, but also as a place to recharge and find balance. Each day, you will have the option to visit some of Iceland’s most unique geothermal pools, spas, and hot springs, places to unwind, restore, and absorb the quiet energy of the land. The crisp winter air enhances the experience of outdoor heated pools, natural hot springs, and saunas, creating a deeply sensory contrast between warmth and cold.
The winter season in Iceland provides an exceptional setting for our journey, with long dark nights that may reveal the dancing northern lights and constantly shifting light conditions that are ideal for photography. We will begin in Reykjavík, where you’ll receive a presentation of our route and structure for the week. For those new to light-painting, Ragne will introduce the fundamentals during an initial session, which we will continue to build upon throughout the journey.

HOTELS:
Our accommodation around the Ring-road will be 3-4 stars hotels hand picked by NORDphotography for their comfort, hospitality, design and service.
Most hotels we stay at has single occupancy in double rooms.

If you are open to share a double room with a fellow participant, please inform us when registration for this journey. The cost difference of a shared double room and single occupancy is 500 Euro total for 7 nights.

We start our journey in Reykjavik, where we have booked a hotel in the center of the city. There is buss transfers, and taxi service from the airport to Reykjavik.

TRANSPORTATION:
Participants on our Creative Roadtrip in Iceland are expected to rent their own car. To ensure a seamless journey, we suggest participants to pair up and share on car rentals. Please let us know when you register if you can drive, and are open to rent a car with fellow participants. We will assist in making sure everyone has transportation. Our experience from last years is that it works best with 2-3 participants in each car, as that gives you more flexibilities to explore your preferred locations.
We will stay at 5 different hotels, in addition to Hotel Odinsve in Reykjavik. Our longest drive is on day 2, and takes about 6 hours, as we make our way to the northern part of Iceland. About an hour before our hotell we will pass the truly unique Forrest Lagoon where we recommend a stop. We will stay at Foss Hotel Myvatn for the next 2 days. We drive to Foss Hotell Eastfjord on October 1st, stopping at Vök Baths to experience their one of a kind floating geothermal pools. Next day we continue to Foss Hotel Glacier Lagoon, where we will stay for 2 nights, until the 4th of October. Our last stop is at Hotel Geysir, across from the famous Golden Circle's highly active Geysir Hot Spring Area with boiling mud pits, exploding geysers. A favourite is lively Strokkur geyser, which spouts water 30 metres (100 ft) into the air every few minutes.

We want to make this journey as flexible as possible and we encourage participants to follow their own focus, and decide what places and locations to explore in their work. Each evening we will send out info about our next hotel, our route, and suggested location along the way that might be of interest, in addition to tips on geothermal pools, spas, and hot springs that is in our vicinity. Our goal is to reconnect as a group for dinner either at out hotel, or restaurants along the ring road.

A WhatsApp group will be set up well in advance to connect participants and coordinate logistics. We will continue using the WhatsApp group to keep contact with each participant as we make our way around the ring route.
