FINDING THE NARRATIVE

A Mentor Class

with SAL TAYLOR KYDD

Period: Feb. 26 to Sep. 10 (2026)

Join writer and photographer Sal Taylor Kydd for a seven month online mentor program dedicated to exploring the rich interplay between text and image within the book form. â€‹

Sal is the author of several acclaimed artist books combining poetry and photography, with work held in collections such as The Getty Museum, Bowdoin College, the Peabody Essex Museum, and the Maine Women Writers Collection at the University of New England.

Sal Taylor Kydd

This mentorship is designed for photographers who are developing a book project and wish to deepen their understanding of how language can shape, disrupt, or expand the photographic narrative.

Each participant will bring a work-in-progress body of photographs to refine over the duration of the program. Together, we’ll examine how text whether poetic, narrative, reflective, or fragmentary can interact with images to create resonance, tension, and new interpretive possibilities.

Through monthly group critiques, guided assignments, and presentations, we will explore the essential elements of bookmaking: sequencing, pacing, structure, and the conceptual and material considerations that define the book as an artistic object.

Sal will share insights from her own practice as well as from artists working across disciplines to broaden our understanding of what a book can hold and what it can become.

By the end of the mentorship, participants will have developed:
• A working book dummy integrating text and image
• A clearer sense of narrative intention and project direction
• A strengthened artistic voice within the context of the book form

TESTEMONIAL:

Sal is an incredibly patient and generous instructor (with a great sense of fun). She is that rare type of artist who can articulate her version and inspire others to do the same using our own voices and our own imaginations, memories and stories. The assignments are fun but also challenging. And they open up space for individual creativity. A. Selwyn
