FINDING THE NARRATIVE
a mentorship with SAL TAYLOR KYDD

Period: Mar. 26 to Oct. 1

Our Mentorship Program with acclaimed Artist Sal Taylor Kydd is a long-form mentorship designed to give a single project the time, attention, and critical focus it rarely receives.

What makes this program unique:

-
Seven-month duration, from March 26 to October 1, allowing a body of work to evolve slowly and rigorously.
-
Limited to 6 participants, ensuring close dialogue, sustained feedback, and meaningful collaboration with the mentor.
-
Monthly group critiques focused on projects in progress.
-
One 50-minute one-on-one mentorship session midway through the program for in-depth, individualised guidance.
-
Dedicated focus on development of a project within the book form, where image and text treated as equal, interdependent elements.
-
Mentorship led by an internationally recognised artist with extensive experience in artist books combining photography and writing.
Join writer and photographer Sal Taylor Kydd for an intensive online mentorship dedicated to the dynamic relationship between photography and text within the book form. Running over an extended period, the program offers rare continuity, allowing sequencing, language, and structure to develop through reflection, critique, and revision.

Designed for photographers developing a book project, the mentorship examines how text, poetic, narrative, reflective, or fragmentary, can shape, disrupt, or expand photographic meaning. Text is approached not as explanation, but as an active component that can create tension, rhythm, and resonance.

Each participant enters the program with a work-in-progress body of photographs. Through monthly group critiques, guided assignments, and focused presentations, participants work through sequencing, pacing, structure, and the conceptual and material decisions that define the book as an artistic object.

Midway through the program, each participant receives a 50-minute one-on-one session with Sal, offering a concentrated space for critical feedback at a pivotal moment in the project’s development.

By the end of the mentorship, participants will have developed:
• A working book dummy integrating text and image
• A clearer sense of narrative intention and project direction
• A strengthened artistic voice within the context of the book form

TESTEMONIAL:

Sal is an incredibly patient and generous instructor (with a great sense of fun). She is that rare type of artist who can articulate her version and inspire others to do the same using our own voices and our own imaginations, memories and stories. The assignments are fun but also challenging. And they open up space for individual creativity. A. Selwyn
