  with Travis Hocutt

28 March - 2 April 2023

SAGA - Inderøy - Norway

A hand bound book, designed and created by the artist, is a powerful statement, and is often regarded as a unique collectors item.

Travis Hocutt

This workshop will cover various bookbinding techniques as well as ways for you to incorporate your own work into a handmade book. Participants are welcome to focus on learning many different book structures, or to use the class to make a final book project. This class is structured so that beginners as well as advanced students can take something away from class. Beginners will learn a number of book binding techniques, advanced students may wish instead to select and complete a final project.

You will be introduced to several book binding techniques including Accordion, Japanese stab, clam-shell boxes, portfolio folders, as well as several variations of those bindings. Students will also be provided with a detailed materials list describing both the minimum materials necessary as well as descriptions of optional tools and materials so you can select the materials you need for your own projects.

Throughout the class Hocutt will be demonstrating various bookbinding techniques and talking about the various material and tool options available. Hocutt will answer any questions and will be available to help troubleshoot any problems as well as give feedback on books you make.

Advanced students:

Participants who intend to create a finished artist book should be familiar with book-binding, and should have a plan about the size of their book and binding technique they wish to use. Travis will give advice in this regard in class, but it is important that you have started the thought process and considered different sizes, and bindings that fits your work, before the workshop starts. You should also have prepared the images, and prints, which of course then should be fitted for the book size, and your chosen binding.

You can print images at SAGA during the workshop. Additional cost will then apply.
